Exploring Fish Welfare in Indonesia: Highlights from the AFWN Workshop in Surabaya

Fish welfare is still a relatively new topic in Indonesia’s fisheries and aquaculture sector. However, as global conversations around sustainable food systems continue to grow, discussions around fish welfare are also beginning to gain attention across Asia, including Indonesia.
On 21–22 April 2026, the 3rd Asian Fish Welfare Network (AFWN) Workshop was held at Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya. The workshop was led by the Institute of Aquaculture at University of Stirling as part of the Asian Fish Welfare Network initiative funded by Coefficient Giving.
The workshop brought together researchers, NGOs, government institutions, and industry representatives from across Indonesia to discuss how fish welfare could be better understood within the Indonesian context. Discussions explored interdisciplinary welfare approaches, implementation challenges, and the importance of building baseline understanding before introducing interventions.
Representing Senang Eco, Salwa Raihana (our Business Development and Project Manager) and Annisa Dinulislam (our Content and Communication Specialist) joined discussions and exchanged perspectives on how fish welfare connects to sustainable aquaculture, responsible food systems, and the broader blue economy.
For Senang Eco, this conversation strongly aligns with our mission to support sustainability efforts grounded in both global standards and local realities. As one of the early pioneers exploring fish welfare in Indonesia, we look forward to continuing collaboration and learning alongside stakeholders working across fisheries, aquaculture, and sustainability sectors.
