Restoring Earth’s Balance: A Deeper Dive into Cooling the Climate

As the climate crisis intensifies, the question is no longer if we need to act — it’s how. In Cooling the Climate, co-authored by our advisor Rob de Laet, the answer lies not just in emissions reduction, but in repairing the Earth's natural cooling systems through ecosystem restoration.
The book challenges the conventional “net-zero by 2050” narrative and instead proposes a nature-first approach that can cool the planet faster, more affordably, and more equitably. At its heart is a bold yet scientifically grounded mission: regenerate degraded landscapes, revive water cycles, and restore biodiversity to stabilize our climate.
One of the book’s central insights is how damaged ecosystems, particularly soils, forests, and watersheds, are deeply connected to climate extremes. By rehydrating land and supporting community-led restoration efforts, we can actively reduce global temperatures while supporting livelihoods and resilience on the ground.
The authors also highlight success stories from regions already implementing these strategies from reforestation efforts in Africa to agroecology movements in Latin America. These stories aren’t just inspiring; they’re roadmaps for a new era of climate action that puts nature and people at the center.
